BOY SCOUT TROOP 500, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
Meeting Minutes - 06/24/09

Opening:
The regular monthly meeting of the Troop 500 Committee was called to order at 7:10 p.m. in the Rosary Room at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.

Present:
Ron Aguirre, Angelo Armondo, Art Villarreal, Darlene Whitley, Linda Zaiontz

  1. Assistant Scoutmaster’s Report:
    1. Ron reported the scouts attended the El Rancho Cima Summer Camp from June 14 – 20.  Ten scouts and three adults attended.  Of the 20 or so scout troops attending, Troop 500 was one of only four to receive the El Rancho Cima Ranch Award.  To receive this award, the boys had to accomplish a number of service projects, the leaders attended various courses, and the troop participated in various contests and events.  The troop also achieved this award because of their consistency in wearing the Class A shirts to each meal in the dining hall.  Although not required, Troop 500 was the only troop in camp to carry their flag to each dining hall meal (breakfast and dinner) on each day of camp.  The scouts of Troop 500 quickly responded to what needed to be done in the campsite as well as with their classes and projects throughout the week.  Ryan Armstrong was the first to tackle the climbing tower.  Logan Puente offered the "Grace" prayer at the staff luncheon of 25 or so staffers.  The 100+ temperatures were brutal.  Chris Graham was a great help for the second part of the week, especially keeping the newer scouts going on their merit badge requirements.  In the entire Troop came away with 28 completed Merit Badges and 11 partial Merit Badges.  The partials do not have many requirements to finish to make them complete.  Veterinary Medicine is almost completed. Six scouts completed the Horsemanship Merit Badge which included among other requirements saddling the horse and riding the horse. The cost of the camp for the scouts was $230.00 each. The facilities were rundown but the staff/leadership was good.  Would not recommend going back to that section. The health facility was closed when needed by leader. On a positive note, a thumb drive of training records was given.
    2. A Court of Honor might take place in August before school starts.
    3. Once a year planning should be completed to be considered a Quality Troop.
    4. Recommend reinstituting Monthly Patrol Leader Meeting and for the Patrol Leader to attend the Committee Meeting.
  2. Treasurer’s Report:
    1. Angelo gave copies of the Treasurer Reports for 4/15/09 and 5/27/09 to all committee members present. These reports were reviewed and the scout accounts reconciled. Ron made a motion to accept the reports and Linda seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously accepted.
    2. Ron needed a reimbursement check for propane gas of $12.76.
    3. Darlene stated the Scout Shop account needs money. She will take a check of $100.00 to the Scout Shop.
  3. Committee Chair’s Report:
    1. Darlene requested to order 330 Poinsettia plants again for the Christmas season. Ron made a motion to accept the request and Angelo seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously accepted.
  4. Venture Crew Report:
    1. Art stated that the Venture charter had lapsed.
    2. He said the youth group didn’t work in adding members.
    3. He stated he would like to join Troop 500 as an adult leader or help on the committee.
  5. Adjournment:
    1. As there was no further business, Angelo made a motion to adjourn, Art seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously accepted. The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for the third Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rosary Room at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
